Tree Planting With The Mayor

On Friday 25th November a special visitor came to Brighton Avenue Primary School.

The Mayor of Gateshead came with two ladies from Morrisons, to plant a pear tree in the school grounds.  Jordan, Chloe and Rebecca helped the Mayor to dig a hole and then plant the special tree.

Afterwards, the Mayor joined the children in Key Stage 2 as they rehearsed the songs from their Christmas production Hosanna Rock. DSCN6349.JPG

Fruits Of Their Labour

After many months of looking after their plants, the Gardening Club finally got to see their fruits of their labour.  The onions, which were planted in autumn, were finally ready to be harvested.  The children carefully pulled them up and took them home to cook. They can't wait to harvest the rest of their crops later in the year.

EAT! Cakebook festival

On Thursday year 3 were lucky enough to work with a head chef of a North East restaurant to make an edible model of the National Trust landmark Brimham Rocks. First the children made scones and rock buns. When they were cooked the children had to look carefully at the rock formations to decided how to stack the food. They took it in turns to create parts of the cake and then decorated the model with different sweets to look like grass, hills and trees.

We think our cake turned out really well. What do you think?

cakebook2 027.jpgOn Sunday 26th June, 6 class members were chosen to join Miss Hind and Miss Wasiejko to enter our model in a competition at Gibside. People all around the North East had been busy making cakes of different landmarks and they all presented them on a giant map at the festival. There were entertainers, games, music and best of all, plenty of food! The children were excellent role models for our school. Well done Year3!

Time Travellers Hit Beamish

DSCN6003.JPGYear 3 went travelling back in time this week to Beamish Open Air Museum. We took a tram heading to the town where we had the opportunity to explore Ravensworth Terrace.  The children were amazed that they were finally able to see the terrace which once stood on the school site!

After lunch the children had a ride on the carousel before taking the tram to Home Farm to have a look at the animals.

At the end of the day the children went home with big smiling faces after having such a great day out.

The students decided on whether to be a Spartan or Athenian and prepared banners to support their city states during the event.

The children took part in events such as 'Plane Throwing', 'Last Person Jumping' and 'Standing Like A Statue of Zeus'

Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals were awarded to the winners in a award ceremony at the end of the 2day event.

The children had a great time and are looking forward to taking part in an outside Olympics at the end of this term. DSCN5659.JPG

Lets Get Cooking!

Year 3 have been cooking over the last few weeks as part of the literacy and theme.  The children have been following instructions to prepare Cheese On Toast; Honey Glazed Prawns and also Tzatziki!

The children had a great time peeling, chopping and finally eating all the food!

We also had the opportunity to try a selection of Greek food such as pitta bread, olives and Greek yoghurt.

All of this experience helped the children to write some fantastic instructions.  If you fancy having a try at cooking any of these recipes please ask a Year 3 for a copy of their

instructions!

Year 3 Assembly

Year 3 spent last week planning and preparing their class assembly.

Over the week the children worked in small groups planning what they were wanted to say and then practicing their own part.  Miss Wasiejko was on hand to offer support however, she was only needed when the children needed help in designing their powerpoint!

On the big day all the children preformed well and were very proud in doing all the work themselves!

Gannin' Along To The Shipley

On Monday the children visited the Shipley Art Gallery to look at the famous painting 'The Blaydon Races'.  The children dressed up and posed like the characters in the painting.  We also looked at the many different objects and tried to find them in the painting.  Dillon was fascinated with the Victorian copy of The Times and spent most of the time reading it!

Kings and Queens Theme

This term has seen the children studying the theme 'Kings and Queens'.

The theme started with the children all designing and making their own crowns.  Lots of jewels and gold were used to produce some spectacular crowns.  The children all dressed up and posed for their own royal portrait.

We then studied the story of King Arthur.  The children designed their own story boards and then performed their play about how Arthur became king.

Our next stop on our learning journey was 1066 and the Battle of Hastings.  The children examined pictures of the Bayeux Tapestry to look for clues about what happened.  They found lots of differences between the Normans and the English armies.

After half term the children moved onto James I and the story of Guy Fawkes.  We produced some really effective art.

One afternoon the children all became court jesters as they were curious of how royalty was entertained. We all tried telling jokes and juggling which was very tricky but very entertaining.

At the moment we are looking at the current royal family.  We have found out the names of the Queen's children and grandchildren and have managed to draw a family tree.  We drew our own family tree as well.

Living like the Ancient Greeks

As our theme work came to an end we decided to celebrate our achievements over a Greek banquet. As well as tasting a range of Greek food such as olives, houmous and feta cheese we decided our party just wouldn't be complete without our Greek style music, dancing and red wine (blackcurrant juice)! We all had a great afternoon and tried lots of tasty new food. Here are some pictures from our party....

Year 3 and the Ancient Greeks

During the spring term we have been learning lots about the Ancient Greeks. We have been reading and writing our own Greek myths. We decided to publish them and they are fantastic- you can find them in the school library.

One of our favourite myths was Perseus and Medusa. During our 'instructions' unit in literacy we worked in teams to create these brilliant masks and shields.....be careful you don't look too hard as Medusa may turn you to stone!!

S7300775.JPG S7300777.JPG

We have also been studying Greek art and finding out the meanings behind the picures and patterns. We made some designs on the computer and then used clay to make our ddesigns become real. We carefully painted our pots and are taking them home as lovely Mother's Day gifts....we hope you like them!

Metro Station

Following work on our transport theme, Year 3 visited the metro station to find out all about the trains and the staff that worked there. We took lots of photos and have been working very hard on the laptops to make them into photostories. We have also transformed our quiet room into a fantastic role play area. Take a look at us in action...S7300650.JPG S7300641.JPGS7300655.JPG S7300656.JPG S7300659.JPG
