For the first online competition, we want to see how good Brighton Avenue's pupils are at story writing. Can you complete the ending to this story:

Jake finally got a chance to run with the ball. He took it past one player, then another, he was one on one with the goalkeeper! He was just about to shoot when suddenly...

What has just happened to Jake? Did he score? Did he miss? What could have happened so dramatically?

Write the ending to this story either by hand or on the computer and hand it to your teacher, Closing date is Thursday 9th February 2012 and a winner will be announced on Friday 10th February.

Wow!! We have learnt a lot about the Great Fire Of London so please ask your child about the display and I know they will be able to tell you all about this historical event.

Remember we will be going across to Newcastle next Tuesday the 7th February to learn about the great fire of Newcastle and Gateshead.

Perilous Pursuits

Welcome back everybody! Our Spring term learning theme is 'Perilous Pursuits' where we will be delving into the most dangerous escapades and journeys of all time!

So far, we have written brilliant adventure stories based around the Micheal Morpurgo book 'Why the Wales Came' and we are currently investigating the Titanic disaster. We are particularly enjoying researching key facts about the vessel through documentaries and the Internet.

We hope to find out lots more over the coming weeks, and our working hard to put work together for our end of term showcase assembly on Friday 30th March. If you have any ideas or questions linked to our theme, please leave a comment below!

Fantastic Family Evening!

A huge thank you to all the families who attended our Family Evening held on Wednesday 25th January. We're sure you'll agree that a great time was had by all who attended! With our 'Review of 2011' quiz and bingo games on our large screen projector there were plenty of activities in the hall. Some of the younger pupils enjoyed playing party games and participating in treasure hunts around the school. Lots of delicious treats were on offer too!

Who would like to go on the best trips every term? How many points did you collect last term? Would you like some more?

As you know, Mrs Pallent and Mrs Dickinson are always looking to hand out their special points to children who do lots of writing at home. But sometimes it can be hard to think of things to write about. Well from now on, there will be a weekly competition on the website for you to take part in and possibly win some fantastic prizes!!!

All you have to do is log on to the website every week and find the competition question. It could be a story, a poem or even a recount of something you have done. You can either type your entry on the computer or write it by hand but either way you will be in with a chance of earning those special points. The best entry may also win a star prize!

Make sure you keep logging onto the website to find out how you can enter the weekly competitions and good luck!

World War II Music Workshop

On Wednesday 25th January, Brighton Avenue were treated to an amazing journey back in time to World War II. Mr Parkin and his colleagues from the Drydon Centre played us a variety of songs from the 1940s and taught us all about life during the Second World War.

Some of Brighton's children got a chance to become soldiers and marched off to France to fight against Hitler's German forces. Many children got a chance to become members of the band and there were even some excellent swing dancers amongst the Key Stage 2 audience.

We also had our very own Brighton Avenue newsreaders in the form of Akeesha and Max who did a brilliant job of retelling the events throughout the Second World War. A great time was had by all of the children (and the staff) and we are looking forward to learning more about this historic period of British history.

We're going on a bear hunt, we're going to catch a big one ...

Last week we did lots of different activities related to the bear hunt. We took the children outside and acted out the different scenes. The children had a fantastic time and said they would love to go on a bear hunt again!!

Today we went to the local park to use observed evidence to help answer a question (this is Level 2 target in Science), can a bigger force slow you down or make you go faster?

Back in the classroom we remembered Science words to help label diagrams: change direction, push, pull, go faster, slow down, stop.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to Brighton Avenue after what I hope was an enjoyable winter break. The children have come back in high spirits and we are looking forward to getting back into school life.

This term, our theme will be 'One Planet, Our Planet'. We are going to be learning about the world that we live in by learning about other countries which the children may have links with. We will compare our lives to those who live on the other side of the world and get the chance to read the weather forecast for the entire planet. We will also learn how to make our very own musical instruments using only recycled materials. To support our theme work, it would be fantastic if your child could bring in photographs of them in different countries across the globe. We will of course take great care of them and return them to you

There will be a few changes to the timetable this term. We will no longer be swimming; instead this will be replaced with an extra PE lesson on Monday afternoons.

Monday	PE and homework handed out.
Thursday	Guitars and news.
Friday	PE and homework collected in.

Can I remind you that reading books need to be brought into school every day and they will changed if your child's reading record has been signed. Reading with your child at home is a very important aspect of their learning and it also gives them extra points towards rewards at the end of the term.

The Reception children have been very busy building a fire pit in our school grounds. We dragged large tree trunks, used mallets to knock sticks into the ground, rolled stones and weaved sticks! We have all had a fantastic time and we can't wait to start using the fire pit! Look at some of the photos below!

The children who come to the group in the afternoons have begun finding out about our new theme - "Feel the Force". They have been having fun investigating different forces as part of their Science and are going to find out about vehicles used in different places and different periods of history.

The children who come to the group in the mornings have been enjoying the new role play area in the classroom - "The Greengrocers" and also practising their literacy and numeracy skills relating to this.

Centre for Life Trip

At the end of the Autumn Term, the children who managed to collect the most points were rewarded with a fantastic day out at the Centre for Life in Newcastle. The children were able to investigate a wide range of interactive exhibits at the Centre, as well as watching shows in a lecture theatre and the Planetarium.

After lunch, the children were able to try their hand at ice skating as well as enjoying a hot chocolate and cookies. The children, and staff, all had a fantastic time and it was an excellent way to end a term in which the children have all worked very hard.

Tree Planting With The Mayor

On Friday 25th November a special visitor came to Brighton Avenue Primary School.

The Mayor of Gateshead came with two ladies from Morrisons, to plant a pear tree in the school grounds. Jordan, Chloe and Rebecca helped the Mayor to dig a hole and then plant the special tree.

Afterwards, the Mayor joined the children in Key Stage 2 as they rehearsed the songs from their Christmas production Hosanna Rock.

Today both groups visited Gateshead Central Library and enjoyed hearing stories and choosing books.
We have also been busy over the past few weeks making and selling cakes to raise money for two new pet guinea pigs for Nurture Group. Watch this space to find out how we do!

First Draft at the Live Theatre

Over the past few months Max and Niamh from Year 6 have been involved in a very special project. They teamed up with scriptwriters and actors from the Live Theatre in Newcastle to work on the First Draft project. After lots of planning sessions, the twosome wrote and produced their very own playscripts. They then had the honour of watching their plays be performed by professional actors at the Live Theatre. Year 6, along with Mrs Pallent and Miss Heathfield, went along to support them and see the show. We were all extremely impressed by the magnificent show!

We have been working in outdoor area and really enjoying it. Miss Marley is completing a course in Forest School Leadership so we will be outside every Thursday afternoon in our garden area. This is what we have been up to in our first session. We were rebuilding fairy house as the giants had been and knocked them down. The fairies had left us special 'fairy breath' to make special bracelets with. We had great fun learning outdoors! It helped us to develop our vocabularly and story telling skills enormously!

Nurture Group Visit to Bryson's Animal Shelter

Nurture Group have been working hard raising money to sponsor a cat and dog at the shelter. Thank you very much to everyone who bought our cakes and gave us donations. We were able to donate over £50 along with pet food and blankets to help the volunteers with their important work. We are eagerly awaiting photographs and information about the cat and dog the children chose to sponsor. We really enjoyed our visit and would like to say a big thank you to the staff who showed us around.

Brighton Avenue vs Harlow Green

A huge well done to the Brighton Avenue 7 a-side Football Team who played their first game together against a tough opposition in Harlow Green. After going 3-0, they came back to within 1 goal but at the full time whistle, they were on the wrong end of a 5-2 scoreline. Each one of our players can hold their heads high after a very spirited performance in which they learned many valuable lessons.

Special mention goes to 2 players: Ray Crighton who scored both Brighton's goals, and Bailey Hart who was awarded with Man of the Match for his tireless running all game long.

Well done to all the players!!!

Go Ride Race

On Wednesday 5^th October, 10 Year 6 children took part in a cycle race held at Kingsmeadow School. They had to wear their jackets and helmets before setting off on a challenging course. Pedalling like mad, they cycled their way around the course under the watchful eye of Miss Greaves. Times were compared between children from Brighton Avenue and two other schools. Hurrah! Success! Mikolaj and Niamh were awarded gold medals, Ray a silver and Chloe D a bronze. The excited children couldn't wait to show Mrs Sweeney their medals. She was absolutely delighted at the results. Well done to all 10 children who entered the competition.

European Day of Languages

Monday 26th September was the European Day of Languages. As we are a multi-cultural school, Mrs Gibb worked hard to organise a wonderful day for us. We had special visitors and musicians from all over Europe, tasted some delicious food from around the continent and had some very special teachers for the day! Two of our parents (and one sister!) gave up their time to teach us more about their culture and heritage. A huge thank you to all our fantastic volunteers and to Mrs Gibb for organising a super day.

Over the past half term, Y6 have worked hard designing experiments and testing variables linked to our 'Micro-organisms' unit of work. We have made observations on environments where mould likes to breed, and have looked closely at how yeast acts on dough mixtures. We have developed our scientific skills throughout these investigations and definitely have some scientists in the making!

Mouldy bread - yuck! We made sure we worked in safe conditions, keeping the bread in sealed bags at all times.

Yeast investigation number One! Can you guess how we investigated how much carbon dioxide was produced by the yeast mixtures?

European day of languages in Reception!!

The Reception children were very lucky to have some of the older children in the school come into our class to teach us different languages. We learnt hello in Czech, Arabic, Kurdish and Zulu. We found Czech the easiest to learn. We learnt Hello in Czech which is Ahoy and bye which is Chow. It's lovely to be able to say hello to our Czech friends in Reception! Here at Brighton Avenue we have updated our old ICT suite into a state of the art 'Learning Zone' full to the brim with exciting new equipment and software. Year 6 started an ICT and Design Technology project last week using some of our fabulous Lego 'WeDo' equipment. In groups we set about building a hungry alligator using Lego blocks, motors, cogs and pulleys. It was great fun! Although we have only just started the project, one group mangaged to complete their design and program their alligator to snap its jaws and talk! Watch this space as we build and program more devices using this brilliant software!

Well...what a fantastic year! We made sure our brilliant Year 6 class left Brighton Avenue in style on the last day of term. After our special awards ceremony and yearbook presentations, little did the class know what surprises were in store! Mrs Hives and all the lunchtime staff for decorated a very special 'top table' so our leavers could dine in style for their final time. The biggest surprise came after lunch, when a stretch limousine pulled up outside the Y6 classroom door, party music blaring, the gang headed to the Quayside to see the sights. Thanks to Mrs Hunt for organising this super treat!

Finally...a note to our Year 6 class of 2011. You have been an amazing class - working hard, trying your best and having fun along the way. We wish you lots of luck in your new schools. Keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on!

Y2 Nature Collage!!

Wow! From drawing plants outside, the amazing boys and girls in Y2 have used a needle and thread to sew and create a collage. We enlarged the drawings, added detail, chose fabric, cut out the shape, used chalk lines to draw the detail and finally created a collage by sewing the details of leaves and flowers. Our Nature Collage is hanging on the window for everyone to see in the corridor and courtyard. What a fab end to our Summer term and time in KS1!

Last week Year 6 pupils were lucky enough to take part in a very special school trip...a visit to LONDON!! We were all so excited for the visit and had completed lots of research in class in the lead up so we could tackle the capital in style!

We stayed overnight in a hotel (which we all loved) and had lots of fantastic experiences during the day too. We saw the sights by both bus and boat, walked around Buckingham Palace and Clarence House, and were lucky enough to go on the London Eye...it was amazing!!

The highlight of the visit for many of us was going to the London Palladium to watch the West-End performance of 'The Wizard of Oz.' It was extra special as we had performed our own version of the show the week before our trip.

It truly was a magical adventure. A huge thank you to Mr Crombie for securing grants to enable the visit to go ahead, and to Mrs Henderson for months of planning and organisation.

Woweee!! The AMAZING Y2 boys and girls had a fab day at South Shields Beach on Friday building a "Brighton Bouncy Castle" and a "Collage Dragon Castle". The event was to raise money for the Children of the North East Charity and about 60 schools took part. Thank you to Joanne, Kath, Karl, Miss Hind and Miss Judson for all their help.

Stars in Your Eyes Winner!

Over the past 2 weeks, Brighton Avenue has been caught 'Stars in Your Eyes' fever! Every class provided us with some amazing singers who got up and performed in front of the entire school. A huge well done to everyone who took part!

However, there can only be one winner and this year, the crown belongs to Alesia Beqiraj who wowed us with Adele's 'Someone Like You'. Congratulations to Alesia who will now represent the school in Wednesday's Gateshead Grand Final to be held at Brighton Avenue. Well done Alesia!!!

Last week Year 6 pupils visited the Shipley Art Gallery to take part in some transition work to help with moving to secondary school. School is open on Thursday for children in nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Breakfast Club will operate as normal for those children.

School is closed on Thursday for children in Year 3, 4, 5 & 6.

ALL children in ALL classes need to be back in school on the following day Friday the 1^st July. The children in Year 1 & 2 will have their trip to the sea side on Friday, and the coach will leave at 9.15am prompt.

The other children can look forward to an ice cream and pop corn whilst our Year 6 children entertain with their production of 'The Wizard of Oz.

Year 3 spent last week learning about measuring and working out scales. At the end of the week they were faced with a challenge of finding out as many measuring facts about a can of baked beans.

Did you know that there is 140mls of sauce in a can of baked beans? And also that a baked bean is 12mm in length?

Fruits Of Their Labour

After many months of looking after their plants, the Gardening Club finally got to see their fruits of their labour. The onions, which were planted in autumn, were finally ready to be harvested. The children carefully pulled them up and took them home to cook. They can't wait to harvest the rest of their crops later in the year.

EAT! Cakebook festival

On Thursday year 3 were lucky enough to work with a head chef of a North East restaurant to make an edible model of the National Trust landmark Brimham Rocks. First the children made scones and rock buns. When they were cooked the children had to look carefully at the rock formations to decided how to stack the food. They took it in turns to create parts of the cake and then decorated the model with different sweets to look like grass, hills and trees.

We think our cake turned out really well. What do you think?

On Sunday 26th June, 6 class members were chosen to join Miss Hind and Miss Wasiejko to enter our model in a competition at Gibside. People all around the North East had been busy making cakes of different landmarks and they all presented them on a giant map at the festival. There were entertainers, games, music and best of all, plenty of food! The children were excellent role models for our school. Well done Year3!

On Thursday 23rd June, Year 6 pupils visited Saltwell Park to take part in a murder mystery investigation organised by Heworth Grange CLC. Here, we used GPS tracking devices to orienteer around the park, picking up clues to help us solve the mystery along the way. The rainy weather did nothing to dampen our spirits - a great day was had by all!

As part of their visit to London, Year 6 are lucky enough to be going to see the West-End show 'The Wizard of Oz'. We are all so excited and can't wait to see, what is sure to be a fantastic show!

We saw this as the perfect opportunity to treat all parents, pupils and staff to our own production of the show. We are currently learning lines, making props and organising costumes to make sure we do it in style!

Please come along and support us. The show will take place on Friday 1st July at 1:30pm in our school hall. All parents across the school are welcome, the more the merrier!

Time Travellers Hit Beamish

Year 3 went travelling back in time this week to Beamish Open Air Museum. We took a tram heading to the town where we had the opportunity to explore Ravensworth Terrace. The children were amazed that they were finally able to see the terrace which once stood on the school site!

After lunch the children had a ride on the carousel before taking the tram to Home Farm to have a look at the animals.

At the end of the day the children went home with big smiling faces after having such a great day out.

Year One are Time Travelers! This term we are travelling from the past to the future and writing stories about our adventures!

On Wednesday 8th June, Year 6 were invited to Gateshead Stadium to take part in the 'Big Skip' event organised by St Oswald's Hospice. It was a brilliant day; we had lots of fun and experimented with new skipping skills, all to help raise money for a very worthy cause. Could all Y6 pupils please now start to bring their sponsor forms and any money raised back into school. If you are able to make a donation to St Oswald's Hopsice, please see Miss Heathfield over the next few days, all members of Year 6 will be able to tell you about the important work carried out by the charity and how your money can help.

At the end of last half-term to were lucky enough to visit Hall Hill farm to end our theme of 'All creatures great and small'. We were ablt to see lots of animals, feed the lambs and even got to hold some chickks and rabbits. Year 5 Class Assembly

Well done to Year 5 for performing a lovely assembly on Friday 13th May. We hoped we weren't going to be jinxed! Groups of children explained what we had been learning in class. These were research about rainforests in literacy, negative number lines in numeracy, seeds in science, dance in PE, playing guitars and musical notation and where rainforests,deserts and polar regions are in geography. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to watch and have refreshments in the classroom.

Dance - The Haka

We have been learning how to perform the Haka. The is a Maori dance which is performed by the New Zealand Rugby team before they play a match. It is meant to intimidate the opposition. We worked as a class and in pairs to make up our own dances. Part of the dance involves hitting the thighs and chest. Some of us were very enthusiastic and ended up with bruises on our legs. We performed some examples in assembly for our parents and the rest of the school.

First Draft Project

Some year 5 children are taking part in the First Draft Project which is drama based and linked to the Live Theatre in Newcastle. During the first session all of the class took part in some drama activities. Phil and Paddy from the Live Theatre had a discussion and 14 lucky children were chosen to do further drama sessions. After a few weeks two children will then be selected to work at the Live Theatre with script writers and actors to write their own script. Many people from our school will be going to watch the performance at the end of October.

The rest of the class are also writing scripts with Mrs Sweeney to enter a competition linked to Dr Who.

Cooking up a storm!

Earlier this week Mrs Sweeney arranged for Expo-Chef to visit Years 5 and 6 to help us whip up some tasty and nutritious recipes. Together we selected ingredients and discussed nutritional values to help us create some delicious dishes. We made a chicken and vegetable curry, a pasta dish and a vegetable soup. We also discussed the importance of protecting our environment by using up as much of our left over food as possible to avoid unnecessary waste.

During the afternoon sessions we worked in teams to put together presentations based on what we had found out during the sessions. We all left school that day with great ideas and full tummies!

This week our bear named Oscar went missing, we had looked for him but he was no where to be found. We decided that by Friday Oscar must be very hungry so we launched a full scale search to find him,complete with binoculars! There were so many distractions on our way though long wavy grass, squelchy mud and a swirling whirling snow storm to name a few. Did we find our missing bear.................?

We're not going on a bear hunt again!!

As part of our schools 'Royal Wedding' celebration day, Year 6 designed and made some special wedding hats. We were asked to use our imagination to create something completely individual and unique to us, there was only one specification - they needed to be patriotic, and they certainly were! We wore them on our brilliant celebration day just before we broke up for Easter. Calling all Royals...if you need a last minute hat for the big day, you know where we are!

Perfect Parachutes!

This half term Year 6 have been investigating forces as part of the science curriculum. We recently decided to plan and carry out a fair test to help us investigate air resistance. We worked in groups to design parachutes, changing only one variable (such as the size, surface area or shape of the parachute) to observe the impact this had upon the speed of air resistance. Our investigations required lots of scientific skill as careful time keeping was needed. We also carried out repeat measurements to increase the accuracy of our results, meaning we calculated a 'mean' time taken for each parachute to fall.

On Friday the School Council organised and prepared an Easter Fair for the children. It was highly successful and all the children enjoyed the stalls. There was hook a duck, guess the name of the chick, guess how many sweets in the jar, raffle, tombola, treasure hunt, pin the tail on the bunny and Easter nests and juice to eat. Mrs Sweeney and Mrs Conway are really proud of the School Council and the Year 5 children who helped on the stalls. We raised a staggering £213 which will be used to by equipment for the children to play with.

Visit to Eden Camp

Year 5 visited Eden Camp on Wednesday 6th April. Eden Camp was a Prisoner of War camp in World War II and is now a museum about the war. The visit was to reinforce the learning which has taken place througout the term in the Blitzed Brits theme. Although the bus journey was long we saw the effects of World War II in the many displays. These included a blitzed building, Morrison and Anderson shelters, the blackout, a submarine, munitions factory, land girls and the black market. The prisoners exercise area was also very popular and we sang along to the songs in the puppet show. Everyone had a brilliant day and no-one was sick on the bus. Hurrah!

Hoops for Health

On Tueday 7th April, Years 5 and 6 had a visit from the Newcastle Eagles as part of their Hoops for Health programme. Some of the players came to teach us some important messages. We learned about basketball skills, fitness and community, healthy eating and the risks of smoking. It was a great afternoon where prizes were won and tickets to basketball matches given out. Everyone had a great time.

Recently in PE we have been developing fitness and agility. Each week we complete an obstacle course around our school hall and aim to improve upon our times from previous sessions.

We all aim to stay fit and healthy by exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet.
